Some recovering alcoholics require more than your typical AA meeting, especially if there aren't any near them. Smartphones, in particular, are making it easier for recovering addicts to find resources available to them to stay on the road to sobriety. The internet is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, making it helpful in long-term recovery.

You can share your personal story anonymously on social media or blogs. Not only can this be cathartic to you, but you can also help someone else in a similar situation. It can be healing for yourself as well as many others who are struggling. There are many alcoholism recovery blogs focused on inspiring, empowering, and educating fellow alcoholics.

Nowadays it's hard not to find a recovery app that is right for you. Some apps offer alcohol monitoring, and track the number of days you have been sober, so that you can hold yourself accountable to your sobriety. They provide inspirational quotes and remind you of essential milestones you've reached, which can can be very motivational.

Social media

There are Facebook recovery groups available to join that provide a safe space to discuss your struggles. These groups give recovering addicts the opportunity to connect with people online and offline. People have made long-lasting relationships with these groups as well as finding sponsors.


Twitter and Instagram are other social media platform where people can show their photos and videos. You can follow fellow recovering alcoholics or accounts like Soberlink that provide daily inspirational quotes and positivity. You can find people by searching hashtags such as #soberlife, #alcoholism, and #recovery to share motivational content with each other.

12-step program

There are several 12-step meetings and programs available online. They also make it easy to search for open meetings near your location wherever you are. You can attend a virtual meeting through video streams or chat rooms. As long as you have internet access, you can pick and choose what meeting seems valuable based on your current mood. This is a convenient way to attend an AA meeting when on vacation, or on-the-go.

Other

Search engines can provide you with endless resources about recovery and alcohol addiction. You can search for treatment facilities and research if they accept your insurance. There are chat rooms available where you can ask questions or socialize with other recovering addicts. Technology and the internet are becoming an excellent place for alcoholics to access answers.
