Coping with Grief and Loss: How to Heal


Whenever there is a big change in someone’s life, it’s possible to feel grief and loss. Loss can be of anything including: relationship breakup; death of a loved one; end of a dream; etc.
Sadness can lead to physical symptoms such as loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping or having brain fog. 
One of the worst parts of grieving, is not knowing if there’s a normal way to do it. Everybody has an opinion and when you’re in it, it’s difficult to figure out what’s proper.
The truth is, everyone deals with grief and loss in different ways and there is no one right way.

How to heal

However, there are certain things that could help you on your way to healing.
Taking care of yourself
During intense grief, it might be hard to do normal activities like grooming or eating. Start small. What is a small goal that you know you can accomplish? (ex. Having a nutrition shake in the morning) What usually gives you joy? 
Expressing your feelings
Grief expressed, is better than grief repressed. Would making a memorial help you grieve better? Would it be best to talk it through with a friend? There is no one way fits all, but try in some way to express your grief. 

When do I need professional help?

Ask for help when you need it.
Here are some signs that you should get professional help: 
  • You start thinking of harming yourself
  • You are blaming yourself
  • You’ve isolated yourself for more than two weeks 
  • You are unable to perform your normal daily activities
