What is mental health?

CMHA describes Mental Health as our state of wellbeing. Mental health refers to our psychological, emotional and relational state, including how we see ourselves, our sense of purpose, happiness, safety, and more.

How does mental health differ from mental illness?

Mental illness speaks to an interruption in our mental health. Perhaps our sense of purpose is feeling threatened—this may lead to depression or suicidal ideation. If our sense of safety is disturbed it may lead to anxiety or PTSD. Whenever a sense of wellness is interrupted, mental illness may follow.

How do I know if I’m experiencing mental illness?

This is a tricky one. Our mental health constantly fluctuates in response to triggers. We may have a medical test coming up that we feel nervous about. Or we may feel elated when we witness a graduation celebration. It’s normal for our moods and mental health to ebb and flow with our circumstances.

For some mental illnesses there are commonly accepted indicators included in the DSM-5—For example, feelings of anxiety that last for 2 weeks or more may indicate chronic anxiety. After a traumatic event, if symptoms such as flashbacks or nightmares carry on more than 3 weeks, it may be a sign of PTSD.

How can I protect my mental health?

We can’t control our circumstances, but there are many ways that we can take care of our mental health. This may include connecting with positive influencers in our life such as friends, family and loved ones. It may mean setting goals or establishing accountability for harmful behaviours. It may include incorporating mindfulness or relaxation exercises into your lifestyle. For some, medical professionals may recommend use of medications to curb symptoms.

For many, the opportunity to talk about issues and explore next steps can be helpful. If you are feeling stuck, talking with a counsellor or therapist may help you regain your sense of balance. Most of all, your counsellor can be there for you if you are feeling alone in your struggles.
