Lose the Family Drama this Holiday Season | Family Counselling and Psychotherapy in Barrie

Debbie Opoku • Nov 25, 2020

Let’s face it, the holidays aren’t always a great time for families. The season tends to emphasize family togetherness—and for many, that idea is daunting. Maybe it’s a difficult season for your family, perhaps a major transition or mental illness of a family member. Whatever is going on at home, there is hope and help.

Here are Three Tips to Improve Communication this Holiday:

  1. Try the softened start-up approach with family members—I feel __________when you_______ and what I need is _________. This approach helps reduce conflicts by offering a clear explanation of what is upsetting you and what you hope can happen instead.
  2. Watch your tone. That thing you heard growing up—it’s still true. Our tone of voice can unintentionally escalate issues sometimes. Try taking a breath first to relax, then speaking in a calm and even voice. This will let your family member know that you are looking for resolution, not a fight.
  3. Be clear about boundaries. This year it will be tough—some family members will want to break social gathering restrictions, others will feel uncomfortable with that. Your kids may beg to visit their friends. Be clear about what you are comfortable with and what's off limits.

Many families in Barrie get stuck in patterns...

Those circular arguments, pecking orders, and coping mechanisms start to repeat. Negative patterns over time can become difficult to resolve in-house. That’s why it can help having a counsellor come alongside your family to guide you through a healing or resolution process.

Family therapy has many benefits such as:
  • Understanding and negotiating healthy boundaries
  • Improving communication
  • Learning how to problem solve together
  • Growing deeper empathy for one another’s challenges
  • Reducing the occurrence and severity of conflicts
  • Developing healthy habits as a family
