Getting pulled over by the police can be one of the most stressful things you will ever experience. For many people, this can seem like a fall into the dark abyss of criminal behavior, even though the final result might just be a ticket. Remember that you have rights. Control Your Breathing

As you wait for the police officer to come out of their car, you have a few moments to compose yourself. Remember that this is not the end of the world and that your behavior can reveal a lot about you. Stay calm and practice relaxation techniquessuch as deep breathing. You will already be sitting down, so you have the first part covered.

With your back straightened, put one hand on your chest and the other on your stomach. Breathe in through your nose as deeply as you can. The hand on your stomach should move up as you inhale, but the one on your chest should only move slightly. After about two to three seconds, breathe out through your mouth, pushing as much air out as possible. You can probably repeat this a few times before the officer knocks on your window.

Consider the Situation

By the time you have taken your third or fourth breath this way, your mind should be clearer, and you should be less anxious. Focus on your breathing and consider your situation at this time. Although getting pulled over can seem like a big deal, the reason for it probably isn't serious. Assuming you haven't been deliberately breaking the law and you don't have something illegal in your car, this will be little more than an inconvenience. Is there anything you've done that you should be worried about? If you can't think of anything, it's probably for a minor issue like a broken taillight.
