CHILD THERAPY

What is Child Therapy and how could it help?

Child psychotherapy is an approach used with children, teenagers, parents and families, where interventions are delivered in an age-appropriate way. Younger children may not talk directly about difficult experiences but rather use play to communicate their thoughts and feelings using the toys provided. Older children and adolescents may use creative arts to help express themselves. Over time, with consistency and through the development of trust, troubling thoughts and feelings can be put into words rather than actions.
Play Therapy
Play therapy is suitable for children with emotional and behavioural difficulties at home, school or in the community. Play therapy may be directive using therapist planned interventions and/or non-directive, where the child leads the play. Goals are developed with the child and family together and the therapist works systematically towards them.

Children who seem worried, stressed, angry or sad may benefit from play therapy.
Children who seem worried, stressed, angry or sad may benefit from play therapy. Children who are struggling after experiencing a trauma, significant loss or some form of abuse may also benefit. Play therapy may help children whose family context has changed, as in separation/divorce, blended families or adoption. Intervention offers children an opportunity to learn about their inner life and particularly their strengths; developing insight and exploring strategies for managing their emotions while incorporating family for support and healing.
