2020 Wasn't the Year We Wanted

Kathleen Tsang • Dec 18, 2020

This time last year none of us thought we’d be stuck in a global pandemic. We had no idea of how it would affect our daily life and routines.

But here we are at the end of 2020 wondering where the last 9 months went. Wondering how we ever got used to wearing masks and distancing in public. Wondering when this will ever end.

Many faced losses this year and had to process grief without the support of community. Some celebrated weddings and weren’t able to share it with their closest friends. Parents had to juggle working at home while managing their children’s virtual learning. Workers had to navigate fluctuating employment.

Simply put, nobody had the year they planned for. It’s hard to quantify the collective effect on society’s mental health—but we all feel it. People are sick and tired of isolation, of the tensions caused among family and friends, and of the financial, emotional, physical toll placed on us by a silly virus.

COVID-19 has magnified every mental health issue imaginable. You may be, for the first time ever, experiencing depression, anxiety, anger, suicidal ideation, trauma, and other concerns. You may have noticed that you generally feel less energy, or have less patience for people—but you’re not sure why. All of this mental health talk might be new to you.

Life is full of unexpected turns. But sometimes those turns can be hard to process. Over time, limitations on our usual balanced lifestyle can wear on our mental health.

The good news is that there is hope and we are here to help. Although we can’t speed up society’s ‘return to normal’, your therapist can help you process and find a way forward. You can find tools to manage recurring thoughts and emotions. You can have someone journey with you as you process trauma and grief. You don’t have to do this alone.
