When should I get help?

Kathleen Tsang • Sep 16, 2020

How do I know if I need someone else on my team?

It can be hard to know when to get help. No matter what you’re going through—anxiety, depression, anger, relationship issues—it can be easy to slip into patterns and not realize how much it’s affecting us.

Our brains are wired to make us adaptable. But there comes a point where issues can begin to wear on us. The nerve-wracking situation passed and the anxiety didn’t go away. The fight stopped but the anger kept going. We found a way to live with our differences but it feels like we’re living separately together.

When is the right time to get help?

The best answer is sooner than later. But on the other hand, it’s never too late. Here’s what I mean:

Like most things, prevention in mental health is important. This means processing issues while they are fresh, navigating tough waters before the proverbial shipwreck, finding coping tools that can help improve your quality of life. Earlier is better. Often in the middle of circumstances it can be hard to see things clearly—reaching out to a third party can help you gain perspective and find positive ways to move forward.

With some mental health concerns there are rules of thumb. For example, it’s normal and healthy to be anxious about uncertain circumstances. However, if anxiety symptoms are severe or persisting for 2 weeks or more, there may be chronic anxiety developing. You can read more about rules of thumb for specific concerns by clicking on the “Counselling” tab.

What if things have already blown up?

The anxiety seems out of control? The depression is taking over? The relationship is in shambles? It’s not too late.

The secret here is that there’s no formula—people find what works for them.

Some people find the right time for counselling is when things become overwhelming. Others get help when they begin to see harmful patterns forming. Some people have already worked through issues and found coping tools, but continue regular check-ins to stay on track. Others are picking up the pieces of devastating circumstances and finding ways to cope and move forward.

Wherever you are at in your journey, and whatever you are going through, it can be reassuring to have a trusted professional lending a hand.
